Abstract

This study aims to describe the process of making the adok musical instrument based on organology studies. The research is motivated by the decreasing number of adok craftsmen, so the making process needs to be documented as an effort to preserve Minangkabau traditional musical instruments. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data was obtained through observation, interviews, documentation, and literature studies. The main informant of the study is Danil, an adok craftsman in Nagari Lunto Timur. The data were analysed descriptively based on organology studies. The results show that the adok making process consists of three main stages, namely preparing tools and materials, forming the adok body, and the finishing process and skin installation. The tools used include markers, measuring tape, circle diameter makers, hammer, nails, axe, drill, chisel, grinder, sandpaper, grinding wheel, sponge, and raffia rope. The main materials used are jackfruit wood, female goat skin, umbrella nails, rattan (sidak), and varnish paint. The making process includes measuring and sketching, forming the body of the adok, drilling the resonance chamber, shaping the tail and body curves, sanding, applying varnish, soaking the skin, attaching and drying the skin, installing umbrella nails, trimming excess skin, and attaching rattan (sidak) inside the adok. Based on organology studies, the shape, materials, size, and making techniques of the adok greatly affect the sound quality it produces. This research is hoped to serve as a scientific information source as well as support the preservation of the traditional adok musical instrument as part of Minangkabau cultural heritage.
