Abstract

Gontong-gontong is a traditional musical art performed during the manjalang mintuo wedding procession in Nagari Pasir Talang, Sungai Pagu District, South Solok Regency, Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the rhythmic pattern of songs performed in gontong-gontong through a musicological approach. The research employed a qualitative methode with a content analysis approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and literature review, and were analyzed based on the musical elements of pulse, meter, rhythmic pattern, accent, and tempo. The findings reveal that gontong-gontong is performed by four married women, each playing a different rhythmic pattern on one of the four gontong-gontong instruments. The song Ilia Ayia Mudiak Ayia accompanies the procession to the bride’s house, while Batuang-Batuang Anyuik is performed during the return procession. The performance is characterized by a moderate and steady tempo without improvisation, creating an integrated rhythmic texture. Furthermore, the performance practice has been transmitted from one generation to the next within families, contributing to the preservation of this traditional musical heritage in Nagari Pasir Talang.
