Abstract

Art studios play a pivotal role in preserving and promoting cultural heritage, especially in sustaining traditional arts amidst the rapid currents of modernization. This study examines the role of Sanggar Sarumpun Ameh, a cultural and artistic community based in Sungai Lambai, Solok Selatan Regency, in developing the traditional arts of Minangkabau. The research employed a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collected through interviews, direct observations, literature reviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that Sanggar Sarumpun Ameh carries three main interrelated functions: cultural, social, and educational. From the cultural perspective, the studio actively safeguards traditional Minangkabau dances and music while innovating to maintain their relevance without losing their core values. It revives and promotes art forms that are at risk of fading, such as traditional dance performances showcased in various cultural festivals, governmental events, and interregional programs. Socially, the studio serves as an inclusive meeting space that unites individuals from diverse backgrounds, fostering values of togetherness, mutual support, and solidarity. This social cohesion strengthens community bonds and provides a safe, supportive environment for members to develop both artistic and interpersonal skills. In terms of education, Sanggar Sarumpun Ameh functions as a non-formal learning space accessible to children and youth. Training sessions not only focus on technical skills but also emphasize the history, meanings, and philosophical aspects of each performance. This approach deepens participants’ cultural understanding and nurtures a sense of pride in their heritage. By blending traditional preservation with adaptive innovations, Sanggar Sarumpun Ameh has successfully built cultural awareness and strengthened local identity among younger generations. Overall, the existence of Sanggar Sarumpun Ameh demonstrates how local art studios can function as catalysts for cultural preservation, social integration, and community-based education. Its contribution extends beyond the artistic domain, influencing social dynamics and empowering communities to sustain and revitalize their intangible cultural heritage.
