PENGGUNAAN SULUAH DALAM TARI PIRIANG SULUAH DI SANGGAR SENI AGUANG GUNUANG KOTA PADANG PANJANG

Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of suluah in the Piriang Suluah Dance at the Aguang Gunuang Art Studio in Padang Panjang City. The research focuses on the background, techniques, functions, and role of suluah in performance. The study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data is collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and then analysed through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Research results show that a torch is the main prop and a distinctive feature of the Piriang Suluah Dance, inspired by the life of the Nagari Gunuang community before the advent of electricity. Using a torch requires special techniques to keep it balanced and safe during the performance. Besides functioning as a dance prop, the torch enhances the aesthetic value, dramatic atmosphere, dancer's expression, and serves as an identity and a means of preserving the history, culture and local wisdom of the Nagari Gunuang community.
